Veganism is usually based on beliefs that should be respected. Contrary to what one might think, it is not very complicated to cook vegan.
It’s a basic principle of ethics not to cause unnecessary suffering to others. When people choose not to eat animal products, this is often based on strong ethical convictions. The government should not oblige people to eat animal products when they eat at government-run institutions. Providing a vegan option to everyone is also a practical means of promoting a more compassionate society.
Pleading for the "vegan option" is a speech that is non conflictual, an additional way to convey the idea of behaviors that alleviate the world's suffering, by occupying every gap in the social space. In 2016 I had stones simultaneously in both kidneys, which forced an ambulance to pick me up at my home and I had emergency surgery the following day for 1 kidney already blocked. The effectiveness of the entire medical device made available to Canadian residents impressed me as well as the care provided to each one (pain management, comfort...). But surprise, in a public service specialized for good health, each patient was fed animal products... harmful to health! Hence the interest of "Vegan Option Canada".
In my view, ensuring that vegan options are available in all public institutions will (in conjunction with ongoing vegan advocacy and animal rights activism) pave the way for our society to accept vegan living as the norm, and will increase the speed at which our society progresses towards the abolition of animal exploitation.
Unfortunately, unhealthy food options of animal origin are ubiquitous in our society and are the sole source of food for many consumers. Although this is a sad fact, there is, however, a solution or at least an opportunity to improve matters. Concerned about human health, animal welfare, the environment and world hunger, Vegan Option Canada (OVC) is working to positively advance our society by making it mandatory that at least one healthy, vegan option be available in all government public facilities across the country. The passage of such legislation would increase access to plant-based foods and allow Canadians to change their minds about what they think is delicious, trendy or healthy to eat. Thank you, VOC.
